Read the apprenticeship offer before signing up
An apprenticeship offers structured workplace learning under specified terms. Before accepting, identify the correct route, check the current eligibility and stipend category, read the training contract and calculate participation costs. Understand the offer as training with defined terms
An apprenticeship is a training arrangement, not simply a regular vacancy with a different label. The applicable framework, trade or subject, training period and contract matter. Read the advertisement for what you will learn, where you will train and who supervises the work. A useful opportunity should develop identifiable skills, rather than leave the learner uncertain about whether any training is planned. Ask how progress and completion will be assessed.
Separate an apprenticeship under the relevant system from an informal promise to learn while helping at a workplace. Both may involve practical activity, but their documentation and rights can differ. Do not assume a company logo on a message establishes registration or official approval. Verify the employer through independently obtained details and use the official portal linked by the responsible institution. Keep the advertisement and joining instructions so you can compare the actual arrangement with what was offered.
Identify the right portal and qualification route
Apprenticeship India and NATS serve different routes within the wider apprenticeship system. BOAT's student guidance directs eligible graduate, diploma and vocational-course candidates towards NATS 2.0. Trade and other opportunities may use the Apprenticeship India route as applicable. Follow the specific advertisement and official instructions rather than assuming registration on one portal qualifies you for every vacancy. If a route is unclear, ask the relevant apprenticeship authority or board before submitting sensitive records.
Create a small application record with the portal, employer, trade or subject, qualification required and closing date. Check whether the opportunity is currently open; an old advertisement can remain searchable long after applications close. Do not pay an intermediary merely to create a supposedly guaranteed placement. Registration creates a profile or application pathway, not an entitlement to selection. Read the employer's process for shortlisting, document verification and joining, then track your actual status rather than a recruiter's verbal assurance.
Check personal eligibility against this advertisement
The Act sets a general minimum age of fourteen and a higher minimum for designated hazardous work; particular opportunities can have additional lawful eligibility conditions. Educational qualification, subject, passing year, prior apprenticeship and previous experience may affect eligibility under the relevant route or advertisement. Do not assume that an age limit attached to a subsidy scheme is a universal limit for every apprenticeship. Ask which rule is being applied when a condition is unclear.
Compare each condition with a document you can produce. Check names, dates, result status and the required qualification. If the applicant is a minor, the applicable contract process involves the guardian; do not treat an online tick box as a substitute for understanding the arrangement. Ask about accessibility, location and any necessary adjustments. Eligibility is only the first filter. You must also be able to attend the training, travel safely and meet its stated schedule without relying on unconfirmed accommodation or support.
Identify the correct stipend category and payment terms
The 2025 revised minimum monthly categories reproduced in NITI Aayog's February 2026 report include ₹8,200 for Class 10 pass-outs, ₹9,600 for national or state certificate holders, ₹10,900 for diploma or technician apprentices and ₹12,300 for graduate apprentices. These are selected categories, not a universal amount for every applicant. Confirm the applicable category and any later amendment with the responsible authority and current offer before joining.
Ask for the total stipend, payment date, bank details required and the treatment of absence or an incomplete month. Distinguish the total entitlement from any government-support component paid through a particular mechanism. A subsidy to support apprenticeship is not automatically an extra amount on top of every advertised stipend. If the offer seems below the applicable minimum, request a written explanation and raise it through the relevant authority. Keep attendance, bank credits and payment correspondence to identify a shortfall accurately.

Read the training contract before you begin
Check the employer's legal identity, training location, trade or subject, start date, duration, stipend and obligations. Read working hours, leave, conduct, safety arrangements, termination and dispute provisions. Ask how the contract is registered or approved under the applicable process and how you obtain a copy. Do not sign blank pages or accept the claim that written terms will appear only after you move to another city. Clarify any fee, deposit, bond or deduction before agreeing.
If a clause requires service after training, understand its duration and remuneration and seek official clarification where needed. The Act's employment provisions distinguish general recruitment policy from a contract containing a post-training service condition. This guide is general education and cannot interpret your individual dispute. Keep every version of the documents and ask the apprenticeship adviser or relevant board about doubtful terms. A well-presented contract still deserves careful reading, especially when a family is borrowing for relocation or giving up current income to participate.
Ask what a normal training week contains
Request a practical training plan, supervisor details and the method for recording progress. Ask what happens when a task is beyond your preparation and which safety instruction or equipment is provided. A beginner should know whom to approach before acting on an unfamiliar instruction. Do not accept the idea that being a trainee means you should hide uncertainty. Responsible learning involves asking questions and carrying out only tasks for which the necessary preparation and supervision exist.
Clarify the balance between learning and routine work, any classroom or basic-training component and the completion assessment. Ask about records or certificates you receive and how they are verified. Speak respectfully about a concern using specific examples: the planned module has not occurred, the supervisor has changed or the assigned task differs from the training plan. Keep records without copying confidential workplace material. A credible learning record explains your own work and feedback, rather than exposing a customer's data or an employer's private documents.
Compare the stipend with the cost of participating
Use actual accommodation, travel and meal estimates. In an invented monthly budget, a ₹10,900 stipend minus ₹4,000 rent, ₹2,000 meals and ₹1,200 travel leaves ₹3,700 before other expenses. These are illustration figures, not local prices or a promise of disposable income. Include the first deposit, moving costs, work clothing and the period before the first payment. Ask what support is genuinely included and what must be paid initially by you.
Compare the opportunity with your present work and realistic alternatives. A lower short-term cash balance may still be acceptable for strong training, but only you and your household can judge whether the arrangement is sustainable. Do not assume a loan will be repaid by a permanent job after completion. Inspect accommodation terms and the commute before relocating. If payment is delayed, raise the issue promptly with records instead of silently financing several months on expensive borrowing while relying on an informal promise.

Plan completion and the next application honestly
Maintain attendance, training progress, assessment results and the completion documents the route provides. Record tasks accurately as observed, assisted or performed under supervision. Before the end, ask the employer about its actual recruitment policy and any vacancies. Apprenticeship completion does not automatically guarantee permanent employment. A specific contractual post-training obligation needs separate reading; it should not be replaced by a general verbal promise that everybody is absorbed.
Prepare a CV that names the training arrangement, dates and skills without describing it inaccurately as permanent employment. Use privacy-safe examples to explain what you learned. Ask for clarification about certificates or pending stipend before your final day and retain official contacts for follow-up. Then apply to roles whose eligibility you meet. A good apprenticeship can provide useful experience and direction, but the next step still involves available opportunities, employer selection and continued learning.
Readers’ questions
Is the stipend the same for every apprentice?
No. The applicable category, route, current rules and offer matter. Check the qualification used for engagement and the minimum that applies, then confirm the total payment and schedule in writing. Do not confuse a government-support component with an automatic additional allowance. If payment appears incorrect, keep attendance and bank-credit records and ask the responsible employer and apprenticeship authority for clarification.
Does registration on an apprenticeship portal guarantee selection?
No. Registration allows the relevant profile or application process; employers still apply their stated selection and verification requirements. Follow the specific advertisement, closing date and joining instructions. Verify the employer independently and do not pay someone who claims a guaranteed seat. A portal account or application acknowledgement is different from a selected, documented training engagement with a confirmed start date.
Will the employer have to give me a permanent job?
Completion does not create an automatic general promise of permanent employment. Read the employer’s recruitment policy and the actual contract. A post-training service condition can have specific implications under the Act, so ask the relevant apprenticeship adviser or board about unclear wording. Do not relocate, borrow or reject another opportunity solely on a recruiter’s verbal statement that all apprentices will be hired.
